About Westerlund 1-26
‘Westerlund 1-26’ tomato was created in 2014 by Dale Thurber of ‘Delectation of Tomatoes’ from a cross made between two giant tomatoes ‘Bigzarro’ and ‘Delicious’. Dale named this variety after the giant red star located in the ‘Altar’ constellation. Huge (the biggest fruit found by Dale weight 3.698 lbs./1.677kg!), raspberry pink-colored beefsteaks, very meaty and juicy flesh with very few seeds. According to the breeder, the flavor ‘is quite good as well – pleasant, though not super-rich or sweet – makes for huge slices for sandwiches, or a single tomato is enough for a pot of spaghetti sauce!’ Vigorous, indeterminate, regular leaf plants with outstanding production. Mid- to late season, about 80-85 days to maturity.
