About Shadow Boxing, Long

‘Shadow Boxing, Long’ was selected from the ‘Shadow Boxing’ line* created by Tom Wagner of Everett, Washington, USA. Fruits of this strain are small (2-3oz./50-80g), elongated, plum-shaped, with striped, brownish outside with anthocyanin splash on the sun-exposed part. Dense, reddish flesh, sweet, tangy, and spicy notes. Determinate, regular leaf plants. Midseason, about 78 days to maturity.

* There are different versions of ‘Shadow Boxing’: long roma type, plum-shaped, round, determinate, and indeterminate. According to the breeder, all types should have pointy ends. This is what Tom Wagner wrote in the Tatermater forum on July 13th, 2013 describing ‘Shadow Boxing’ lines:
“The Shadow Boxing lines I have are showing the great disparity of many traits. I am not sure how I am going to settle out all the strains. The pedigree is complicated and I am not looking at my pedigree books at the moment…but I know on the maternal lines I started with either a pure Green Sleeves or an F-2 (Green Sleeves x Unk) crossed with pollen from a dwarf red that harkens back to a cross between a round red cherry type and a larger fruited but red very long roma type that hopefully carries some of the original VFN backgrounds.
This selection was used as a female vine crossed with pollen from my Bearded Cossack line that has Black Russian, Woolly Green Zebra, and an OSU Blue.
The breeding selections were made several generations with no dwarfs involved. Later on, dwarf segregants were found because I was inadvertently saving compact vines that carried the dwarf gene.
So many selections are looking different… some round… some aroma… some very long like the Green Sleeves (Green Sausage)… some striped, some not… some blue… some not… some woolly… some not… etc., etc. I have some that are very indeterminate.
Because of the nature of the selection work… most of the dwarf segregants will be determinate… with concentrated set… fruits 2 to 3 oz… majority elongated fruit… but when they are round… they stay round… but the nipple gene seems to be present in most. Because of the filial levels my customers have taken the Shadow Boxing… I may have to request seed samples back to put together some divergent seed inventory.”
