About Rutgers Improved
‘Rutgers Improved’ is a strain of a ‘Rutgers’ tomato, which was developed at the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station, from a cross between ‘Marglobe’ and an old New Jersey variety from the Campbell Soup Company – ‘J.T.D.’ tomato and released in 1928. ‘Rutgers Improved’ was introduced in 1943 as a more disease resistant and more productive than the original version. First introduced ‘Rutgers’ was an indeterminate tomato plant, but the ‘Rutgers Improved’ is a short, bushy, compact, determinate tomato plant that yield 7 oz., dark-red tomatoes with thick walls that are loaded with delicious flavors. Excellent canning tomato. Midseason, about 75 days to maturity.
