About Rita’s Black
‘Rita’s Black’ was found by Val and Dan McMurray while they grew ‘Belgian Pounder’ from the seeds they received from Rita De Clerque of Belgium. Rita sent them seeds of three* Belgian heirloom varieties (‘Belgian Pounder’, ‘Belgian Farmer’s Beefsteak’, and ‘Belgian Heart’). Val and Dan McMurray named the new spot after Rita.
Indeterminate, potato leaf plants loaded with brown, pear-shaped, medium-sized (4-7oz./100-200g.) fruits with very good, sweet, and somewhat smokey flavor. Midseason, about 78 days to maturity.
* According to ‘Tatiana’s TOMATObase’, Rita found four varieties, two of which appeared to be the same. As the original names of those heirlooms have been forgotten a long time ago, they were later named ‘Belgian Pounder’, ‘Belgian Farmer’s Beefsteak’, and ‘Belgian Heart’.
