About Juodas Moldaviskas Dramblys (Juodas Moldaviškas Dramblys, Moldovian Elephant, Black Elephant Regular Leaf, Молдавский Cлон)
‘Juodas Moldaviskas Dramblys’ is an old family variety from Rimantė Varkalaitė-Bakienė, Vilnius, Lithuania. Seeds were bought during a trip to Moldova in 1986 from an old woman selling them at the market. Probably seeds were mixed. Plants were compact and strong but unlike the Russian variety known as ‘Chyornyy Slon’ it produced regular leaf vines. Rimante decided to name it ‘Juodas Moldaviskas Dramblys’ which in Lithuanian means ‘Black Moldovian Elephant’.
Compact (about 120-140 cm tall), indeterminate tomato plants yield a good of medium (4-9oz./150-250g), purplish-brown colored beefsteaks with deep green shoulders. Smooth, meaty flesh is sweet, rich, with very strong smokey notes. Midseason, about 75 days to maturity.
