About Hog Heart
‘Hog Heart’ is a very old Italian heirloom, that – according to the ‘Fedco Seeds’ seed catalog – was ‘brought from Italy to Massachusetts, probably between 1910 and 1920, and then by Susan Eastman and Ed Lacy of Gray, Maine, to the Exhibition Hall at the 1988 Common Ground Fair, Hog Heart has won many admirers.’*
Although the typical fruits are elongated, paste-type, this variety was named ‘heart’ because often the plants produce double tomatoes, which look like beautiful heart-shaped fruits. Medium to large (6-11 oz./180-300g), red fruits are very meaty and contain a small number of seeds. Very good, sweet tomato taste. Outstanding sauce makers, great for pizza or for drying, but also good for salad. Indeterminate, very vigorous, regular leaf plants. Late, about 90 days after transplant.
