About Grüne Helarios (Gruene Helarios)
‘Grüne Helarios’ is a large, green when ripe, beefsteak-type tomato plant renowned for its beautiful ribbed greenish-yellow fruits and umami flavor with a light citrus aftertaste. According to William Woys Weaver, an internationally known heritage seeds collector and the grandson of H. Ralph Weaver, who established the ‘Roughwood Seed Collection’*, this variety may be the German selection from ‘Greenwich’ tomato. M. Gehisen listed this variety in 1998 in the Austrian seed saving organization ‘Arche Noah’. First mentioned in the Seed Savers Exchange yearbook in 2010.
Indeterminate, regular leaf plant bearing medium (5-7oz./150-200g), slightly flattened and wavy on the shoulders, greenish-yellow tomatoes (green flesh and yellow epidermis). Meaty flesh with a light citrus aftertaste, a slightly acidic note, and a superbly fresh taste. Mid-to-late season, roughly 85 days after transplant.
* The oldest private seed collection in the Eastern United States which H. Ralph Weaver Weaver established in 1932.
