About Donskoi (Донской)
‘Donskoi’ is a variety from Russian port city Rostov-on-Don (Russian: Росто́в-на-Дону́), which is the administrative center of the Rostov Oblast and the Southern Federal District of Russia. This city lies on the Don River, hence the name of this variety. Introduced commercially in Canada and North America by Tatiana’s TOMATObase Seeds in 2009. Tatiana Kouchnareva of Anmore, Canada received seeds from Tamara Yaschenko’s collection in 2006 as part of large seed exchange and listed this variety at Seed Savers 2007 Yearbook. This is what Tatiana Kouchnareva writes about this variety: ‘There are two tomato varieties called ‘Donskoi’ in Vavilov Institute database – ‘Donskoi 68’ (1950) and ‘Donskoi 202′ (1959). It is not clear if this variety is related to any of the two’.
‘Donskoi’ is an indeterminate, regular leaf plant, that produces a very high yield of beautiful, large (12-18 oz.) red heart-shaped fruits with delicious, sweet, and very rich tomato flavor. Midseason, the first ripe fruit can be harvested about 80 days after transplant.
