About Danko (Данко)
‘Danko’ s a Russian commercial variety, developed by Siberian Research Plant Breeding Institute by Domanskaya Maya Konstantinovna, Gubko Valentina Nikolaevna, Zalivakina Valentina Fedorovna, Kamanin Andrey Alexandrovich, Orlova Elena Arnoldovna. It was included in the Russian State Register in 2000. Danko is a legendary hero from a story by Maksim Gorky. Danko sacrificed himself to save his people by tearing out his heart and holding its burning heart to lead them from darkness to freedom. First offered in the Seed Savers 2008 Yearbook by Andrey Baranovski of Minsk, Belarus and Carolyn Male of Salem, New York. Introduced commercially in North America by Sand Hill Preservation Center and Victory Seed Company in 2009. Determinate, regular leaf plants with wispy foliage produce 5-10 oz., red, heart-shaped fruit. Delicious flavors.
