Why are my seedlings purple?

Young seedlings can get purple for several different reasons:

  • it may be a genetic tendency for varieties with an increased anthocyanin content
  • phosphorus (P) deficiency or the difficulty to uptake P due to too high pH (pH above 7.0)
  • low substrate temperature (below 12°C/53 F)
  • incorrect preparation of seedling substrates (high calcium content in organic substrates or in mineral substrates in the dosed nutrient solution)
